The former Marie Dressler Museum has had an important presence in our community. Initially celebrating one unconventional Canadian actress, Marie Dressler, the local museum is expanding to become the only museum in Canada that will celebrate 3 Canadian female icons in film together in one place, now named the Canadian Women in Film Museum.

These women, as Rick Miller, President and Chair of the Marie Dressler Foundation, describes as a hat trick, won the Academy Award’s Best Actress Oscar in 3 back to back years: 1929 to Mary Pickford, 1930 to Mary Shearer, and 1931 to Marie Dressler. Unfortunately, 90 years later, these are the only Canadian women to win the best actress Oscar.

This museum focuses on the undeniably exciting woman domination in Hollywood from 1920 to 1930. The women in the film industry during this time wrote films, raised important social issues and earned some of the largest salaries of any industry at the time. They therefore denied gendered expectations of their era, but this came to an end in the 1940’s when the industry transformed to become male-dominated, as the feminist themes of the film industry questioned the current understanding of gender roles.

The Canadian Women in Film Museum therefore seeks to answer the question – what do women need to do to regain this influence in the film industry? Through a series of interactive experiences, the museum connects the past with present and motivates the visitors to always demand an opportunity to succeed.

Our team (Rosanna Bouwmans and Bruce Tindall) enjoying the visitor experience

Our team wanted to support this museum in their endeavours to expand their efforts to educate our community on such a prevalent issue in society. We donated a custom ticket booth to match the atmosphere of an old fashioned movie lobby.

We also donated a display case for a moviola editing machine which ties this exhibit together nicely.
